New Bedford Housing Authority

Project Overview

Delta Wye Critical Solutions provided comprehensive design and engineering solutions for the New Bedford Housing Authority, converting gas stoves and dryers to electric alternatives in 330 apartments across three family housing developments. The project aimed to increase safety, improve energy efficiency, and support long-term electrification efforts while ensuring all upgrades met code compliance and sustainability standards.

The developments included:

  • Parkdale Development (1951) – 21 two-story buildings, 100 apartments
  • Blue Meadows Family Housing (1951) – 28 two-story buildings, 150 apartments
  • Nashmont Family Housing – 15 two-story buildings, 80 apartments
Challenges & Objectives
  • Gas-to-Electric Transition – Safely remove gas stoves and dryers while ensuring proper electrical replacements.
  • Electrical Load Capacity & Infrastructure – Evaluate existing electrical supply capacity and upgrade building services as needed.
  • Compliance & Coordination – Obtain approval from the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and ensure all installations met NEC standards.
  • Future-Proofing for Full Electrification – Upgrade electrical services with sufficient capacity for future heating system electrification.
Our Approach & Solutions
  • Gas Appliance Removal & System Capping – Disconnected and capped gas piping in walls and basements.
  • Electric Stove & Dryer Installation – Installed properly sized electric stoves and dryers with code-compliant electrical connections.
  • Electrical Load Evaluation & Upgrades – Conducted load calculations per NEC to confirm power supply adequacy.
  • Service Upgrades for Future Electrification – Installed new electrical feeders and upgraded building services where necessary.
  • Regulatory & Housing Authority Approvals – Coordinated with the AHJ and the Housing Authority to obtain full project approval.
Key Results
  • Improved Resident Safety – Eliminated potential gas hazards by transitioning to electric appliances.
  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency & Code Compliance – Ensured all installations met modern safety and efficiency standards.
  • Future-Ready Infrastructure – Upgraded electrical capacity to support future heating system electrification.
